The Three Days of Darkness

by Robert Ritchie

Although the Church does not oblige us to believe in any particular prophecy or private revelation, it certainly is telling that many mystics and saints speak of the Three Days of Darkness, such as:
Blessed Anna-Maria Taigi, Ven. Elizabeth Canori-Mora, Saint Hildegard and many others.
Here are a few quotes from these mystics.
Blessed Anna Maria Taigi (1769-1837 A.D.):

"God will send two punishments: one will be in the form of wars, revolutions and other evils; it shall originate on earth. The other will be sent from Heaven. There shall come over the whole earth an intense darkness lasting three days and three nights. Nothing can be seen, and the air will be laden with pestilence which will claim mainly, but not only, the enemies of religion. It will be impossible to use any man-made lighting during this darkness, except blessed candles. He, who out of curiosity, opens his window to look out, or leaves his home, will fall dead on the spot. During these three days, people should remain in their homes, pray the Rosary and beg God for mercy."

"All the enemies of the Church, whether known or unknown, will perish over the whole earth during that universal darkness, with the exception of a few whom God will soon convert. The air shall be infected by demons who will appear under all sorts of hideous forms."

The mystic Marie-Julie Jahenny also mentions the 3 days of darkness. (January 4, 1884):

"The three days of darkness « will be on a THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. Days of the Most Holy Sacrament, of the Cross and Our Lady. . . .» three days less one night."

"«The earth will be covered in darkness», says Our Lady on 20th of September 1882, AND HELL WILL BE LOOSED ON EARTH. Thunder and lightning will cause those who have no faith or trust in My Power, to die of fear."

"During these three days of terrifying darkness, no windows must be opened, because no one will be able to see the earth and the terrible color it will have in those days of punishment without dying at once... "

"The sky will be on fire, the earth will split... During these three days of darkness let the blessed candle be lighted everywhere, no other light will shine.... "

Sr. Rosa Colomba Asdenti of Taggia who lived in the 19th c. also prophesied a three days of darkness.

Palma Maria d' Oria (d.1863), as do other seers, tells of the activities of the demons:

"There shall be three days of darkness, during which the atmosphere will be infected by innumerable devils, who will cause the death of large multitudes of unbelievers and wicked men. Blessed candles alone shall be able to give light and preserve the faithful Catholics from this impending dreadful scourge.

Sr. Mary of Jesus Crucified of Pau, (d.1878):

"During a darkness lasting three days the people given to evil will perish so that only one-fourth of mankind will survive."

  1. John, I have always had a question about the three days of darkness and the blessed candles--this is a sincere question, and not intended to be flippant:

How would one light the blessed candles if they are not already lit when the darkness begins? Does this mean that a match or lighter will work, but only to light the candle, or that the faithful will be given some sort of interior message to have it lit ahead of time?

If you have ever heard anyone give a plausible opinion on this, I would appreciate it.

    1. A person must be in a state of grace without mortal sin. Get to confession!!! The matches must be blessed also. The house where you are staying, all the people must also be in a state of grace. The candles must at least be 51% B wax some say 100% but I am not quite sure about that.

  2. Interesting question,
before the 3 days of darkness a big sign in the sky in the form of a red cross (most have foreseen this) and will be visiable by believers and non-believers alike.

That's when believers will know what to do

    1. the cardinal grand cross was formed last year and is still in configuration.

the red sky (red aurora), which is a known sign that precedes the 3 days of darkness, happened just last week. i myself saw the redness.

  3. From what I gather there is no such thing as blessed matches although I am sure matches can be blessed.
The logic behind this would be: if candles are the only thing that can be lit during the time, then God would also allow the matches to ignite in order to light the candles. I would imagine that the matches would then go out afterwards.

  5. Maria, I have heard that you must buy bees wax candles and have them blessed, not those fake cheap candles from walmart.

  6. I purchased blessed beeswax candles, that came with blessed matches. Got them at the Shrine of Rosa mystica, Edmeston, N.Y., several years ago. A Must visit. Retreats this summer. God bless you all.

    1. Catherine- You mentioned that you bought "Blessed" candles/ matches... This has me a bit worried.

The purchase of Blessed items is not allowed. However, from what I understand, if you purchased these candles for the true cost of the candles and not at an increased price (for convenience of being "pre-blessed", or whatever the vendor reasoned), it may be ok. If NOT, then the candle is NOT Blessed, and will NOT hold a Blessing... Ever.

Personally, I purchase and then bring the items I desire to have Blessed to my Priest. This way I KNOW that I am not sinning, nor supporting another in sin, and that my item(s) are indeed properly Blessed...

Wanted to mention, in case you were (or anyone else was) unaware of this... If/ When these 3 days happen, and your candle doesn't light... well, that could make you think that you are in God's Graces (as some prophecies state that only God's faithful that have the Blessed Besswax candles will light), or, you are stuck in total darkness those 3 days.

  7. I just want to point out that when you buy these things you must get them blessed from a priest. Things that we buy are not blessed. It is against the church to sell anything that has been blessed I do believe. Check with a priest on this but I am almost 100% sure on this. God Bless everyone especially all that don't believe.
