The Real St. Gemma

Saint Gemma Galgani

“If you really want to love Jesus, first learn to suffer,
because suffering teaches you to love.” Saint Gemma

Written by Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira

This photograph is of St. Gemma Galgani (1878-1903), a famous mystic who lived in the enchanting town of Lucca, Italy.

Her countenance is impressive for several reasons. First, we note her profound reflection and the harmony of her traits. Second, the saint’s gaze has something elevated and sublime about it. Her thoughts are not of this earth: her countenance displays a supernatural aura.

Her dignity and angelic purity are striking. This is seen by the way her head rests on her shoulders: straight and unpretentious.

She wears no adornment at all. Her hair is simply combed and arranged. Her face is very clean and reveals nothing of a desire for embellishment.

Her dress is black and simple. Yet, St. Gemma combines an extraordinary dignity with a virginal purity which is impalpably reflected in the luminous splendor of her skin. One could say that her skin is as luminous as her gaze. Moreover, her gaze reflects total uprightness. It is that of a mystic immersed in that which she sees. Even we discern something of what she perceives.

The virtue of fortitude also shines forth in her countenance. When the Faith commands her to do something, her will is unbending.

What does she desire? She wants to serve God, Our Lady and the Catholic Church. She forges ahead on this road regardless of the obstacles. She represents the strong woman of incomparable values referred to in Holy Scriptures. Like a rare stone, one readily walks to the ends of the earth to find her.

Pueri Concinite: A Sublime Christmas Carol

Share this Christmas carol... Post it. Email it. Facebook it.

This marvelous Christmas carol was composed by Austrian musician Johann Von Herbeck (1831-1877). The live performance features Les Choristes in the Palais des Congrès de Paris with soloist Jean Baptiste Maunier. Doesn’t the style and calm cadence of this melody capture something of the Catholic Medieval spirit? What do you think?

Lyrics in Latin

Pueri concinite, nato regi psallite!
Voce pia dicite: "apparuit quem genuit Maria!"
Sunt impleta quem predixit Gabriel.
Eja ! Eja ! Virgo Deum genuit quem divina voluit clementia.
Hodie apparuit apparuit in Israel.
Ex Maria virgine natus est Rex.
Alleluia!

English Translation

Sing, children! Sing with the harp in a gentle voice of the King’s Birth.
He has appeared who was born of Mary.
All those things foretold by Gabriel and now fulfilled.
Rejoice! Rejoice! The maiden has borne God, who wills us His divine mercy.
He appears this day in Israel, born of the Virgin Mary; the King is born.
Alleluia!

Post, share, and email this your friends this Christmas.

And Now They Want a Cross in Tennesse Removed

The mayor of Whiteville, Tenn. said his community is under attack from a national atheist organization that is threatening to sue unless they remove a cross atop the town’s water tower. "They are terrorists as far as I’m concerned," said Mayor James Bellar about the Freedom From Religion Foundation. "They are alleging that some Whiteville resident feels very, very intimidated by this cross." The mayor told Fox News Radio that the cross was erected on the town’s water tower about eight years ago by a private group of citizens. They collected private donations to cover the costs. It’s just a...

God Bless You! Now Allowed at School

by Jeremy Kryn

  • VACAVILLE, California, October 4, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The principal of a California school about 45 miles from San Francisco has said that students will no longer be disciplined for saying “God, bless you” in class. The principal’s statement follows news that a health teacher at William C. Wood High School took grade points away from his students for saying “God, bless you” when someone sneezed.

“He realizes his mistake and that this wasn’t the best way to get the kids to behave,” Principal Cliff DeGraw told Sacramento’s FOX40.

When Taylor McGinley sneezed in her health class at William C. Wood High School a few weeks ago, a student replied with “God, bless you.” Health teacher Steven Cuckovich, however, reportedly responded by disciplining the students, telling them that “the blessing doesn’t really make sense anymore.”

“(Cuckovich) said, ‘Do you think that girl is evil, do you think the evil spirits are coming out of her?’ And the guy that said ‘bless you’ was like ‘No, I was just doing what I was supposed to do when somebody sneezes, not trying to be rude,’” McGinley said, according to News10.

McGinley said her teacher never spoke about the expression in class after that.

In Erica Fagan’s class, however, Cuckovich deducted 25 points from students’ grades if someone said “God, bless you.” Cuckovich reportedly told Fagan and the other students saying “God bless you” is a distraction.

“The first time (the student) did it (Cuckovich) took 25 points off of everybody in the class’s grade for one person saying it and then somebody did it the next day and he did it again,” Fagan said.

Fagan’s mother, Vickie, said she emailed administrators, but only heard back from them September 29.

“I can see where teenagers can be disruptive. It’s not something unknown,” Fagan’s mother said. “The specific saying ‘If you guys are being noisy and talking out of turn’ I can see, but when he says ‘When you say, God, bless you,’ and he’s using that specific terminology to say, ‘I’m docking you points,’ that concerns me.”

“It’s not… got anything to do with religion. It’s got to do with an interruption of class time,” Cuckovich told FOX40.

“If they came to me and made an effort to convince me that on religious grounds they felt that they were being prosecuted, I could probably adjust. I didn’t think it was a big deal,” he said, adding that he will find another way to punish perpetrators.

Youthful Souls: Attack on All Sides

Written by Jeremias Wells

In the ongoing assault on the mentality of American youth, we have to be amazed at the resourceful and relentless completeness of the attack. Many casual observers, but not all, accept the fact that it is coordinated in all its aspects. Some prefer to see the destructive programs as a series of individual, although malicious, operations such as healthcare and sex education.

During a seminar at a university in Miami, Florida in 1976, there was a well-known professor of philosophy from a Texas Catholic school who had excellent conservative credentials, with the exception of one liberal trait: he didn’t believe that the political, cultural and moral evils oppressing mankind were interrelated one with the other. In fact he abhorred this concept to the degree that he forbade the word “conspiracy” — which he saw as describing that concept — from his classroom.

Prof. Plinio Correa de Oliveira’s monumental study, Revolution and Counter-Revolution, answers that objection in the following manner. Comparing the crisis of modern man to a forest fire, he made the lucid analogy, “When a forest fire breaks out in a forest, one cannot regard it as a thousand autonomous and parallel fires of a thousand trees in close proximity. Indeed everything helps to make the forest fire a single fact, totally encompassing the thousand partial fires…”[1]

The conversion of the barbarians, in what has been maliciously misnamed the Dark Ages, established Christendom and gave rise to Western Civilization. A fusion between the classical studies of the Greeks and Romans, especially the use of the Latin language, with the Revelation of Christ and the monastic schools of the Middle Ages brought about a Christian educational system that lasted a thousand years. This magnificent edifice began to crumble in the eighteenth century with the arrival of the so-called Enlightenment and the French Revolution.

The morality, spiritual development and internal structure of our youth have suffered a proportional decline along with the demise. In an article published December 28, 2010, the Wall Street Journal reported that 25% of children and teens are taking prescription drugs on a regular basis with approximately 40 million on anti-depressants, anti-psychotics or ADHD medications. With some allowance for over-prescribing, that means there are a lot of stressed-out children and families in the country that are leading very unhappy lives.

The trend since the French Revolution has been to remove the teachings of Christ from public and daily life. With morality abandoned, this has had the effect of frequently leaving children with parents, one of which is not biological, if indeed they are married in the first place. Studies have shown this increases high school dropouts, prison incarcerations and suicide attempts.

The damage caused by modern communication systems such as the Internet, iPhones, Facebook and Twitter have received book length treatment by several educators and journalists and should be explored in a separate article. However, the principal objection was expressed well by MIT professor Sherry Turkle who stated in her book Alone Together that technology is threatening to dominate our lives and make us less human by isolating us from real human interactions.

One more citation to show the minefield that children will have to negotiate to reach adulthood appeared May 2, 2011 in a commentary in the Washington Times by Kerry Picket in which he explores the politically correct attitude of some popular comic strip heroes. In 2008 Spider-man supported Obama and last year a Captain America comic book portrayed Tea Party protesters as villains. Superman takes a more subversive route by renouncing his U.S. citizenship and supporting the policies of the United Nations. No front is left unassailed.

Certainly this coordinated process of destruction is not going to ignore the possibilities of using comic strips to corrupt our youth as the older readers of Al Capp’s Li’l Abner can attest, but to immerse younger readers in the concept of global education that include environmentalism, pantheism among other evils is reaching new depths. Until the teachings of Christ, for which He paid a heavy price, are restored to their proper importance, the tragic conditions of our youth will continue deteriorate abysmally.

What Cardinal Mindszenty Says About Mothers

Written by Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty

The most important person on earth is a mother.

She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral.

She need not.

“She has built something more

magnificent than any cathedral –

a dwelling for an immortal soul,

the tiny perfection of her baby’s body…

“The angels have not been blessed with such a grace.

They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to

bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can.

Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature;

God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation…

“What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this; to be a mother?”

Gathered 'round the Manger

Written by Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira

Once again, Lord, Christmas approaches. Christianity hastens again to adore Thee in the manger at Bethlehem, where Thou can be seen by the light of the twinkling star or under the brighter and more splendorous light of the maternal and sweet gaze of Mary. Saint Joseph stands nearby, so captivated by Thee that he seems to take notice neither of the animals that surround Thee, nor of the angels who have opened the heavens and can be heard and seen, singing in the highest. In a short while, the Magi will arrive with their entourage, laden with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Through the centuries, others will also come to venerate Thy crib: from India, Ancient Nubia, Macedonia, Rome, Carthage, and Spain; Gauls, Franks, Germans, Angles, Saxons, and Normans. Both pilgrims and crusaders will come from the West to kiss the ground of the cave where Thou were born. Your manger will be venerated all over the earth. In the great Gothic or Romanesque cathedrals, multitudes will gather around Thee, offering Thee presents of gold, silver, incense, and above all the piety and sincerity of their hearts.

Then will come the period of the Western discoveries in which the benefits of Thy Redemption will reach new lands. Incas, Aztecs, natives of various tribes, blacks from African shores or further inland, bronze-skinned Indians, slender and pensive Chinese, short and agile Nipponese, all will gather around Thy crib and adore Thee. The star of Bethlehem now shines over the whole world. The angelic promise has been heard by all peoples, and all across the earth hearts of goodwill have found the inestimable treasure of Thy peace. Overcoming all obstacles, the gospel has finally spread to people all over the world. In the midst of contemporary desolation, this great gathering of people from all nations and races around Thee is our only consolation, indeed our only hope.

We are among them, kneeling before Thee. See us, Lord, and have pity on us. There is something we would like to say.

Who are we? We are those who will not kneel before the modern Baal. We carry Thy law engraved upon the bronze of our hearts and we do not allow the errors of our times to become engraven upon this bronze sanctified by Thy Redemption. We love the immaculate purity of orthodoxy above all else and reject any pact whatsoever with heresy, its wiles and infiltrations. We are merciful to the repentant sinner, and since—due to our unworthiness and infidelity—we count ourselves among that number, we implore Thy mercy. We spare no criticism either, of insolent and conceited impiety or of strutting vice that scorns virtue. We pity all men, particularly the blessed who suffer persecution for love of the Church, who are oppressed everywhere because they hunger and thirst for virtue, who are abandoned, ridiculed, betrayed, and disdained because they remain faithful to Thy commandments. Many are those whose suffering is not celebrated in contemporary literature: the Christian mother who will pray alone before Thy crib because her children no longer practice the Faith; the strong yet austere husband who is misunderstood or even loathed by his own due to his fidelity to Thy teachings; the faithful wife who bears the solitude of both heart and soul, because frivolous habits have led to adultery he who should be her support, her “other half”; the pious son or daughter who—while Christian homes are celebrating—sense how in their own home, family life has been stifled by egotism, hedonism, and secularism; the student who is shunned and mocked by his colleagues because of his fidelity to Thee; the professor who is eschewed by fellow staff because he will not condone their errors; the parish priest or bishop around whom a menacing wall of misunderstanding or indifference has been raised because he refuses to compromise the integrity of the doctrine entrusted to his care; the honest man made penniless for refusing to swindle.

All of these isolated people, scattered across the globe, ignorant of each other, now gather around Thee to offer Thee a gift and a prayer.

Their gift exceeds the sun and the stars, the oceans with all its riches, and the earth in all its splendor: they give themselves entirely and faithfully. By preferring complete orthodoxy over approval, purity over popularity among the impure, honesty over gold; by remaining faithful to Thy law even when this entails sacrificing career and fame, they attain perfection in their spiritual life by practicing love of God above all things, which is a sincere and lasting love. Such love differs greatly from love as it is understood nowadays, which predominantly consists of gushy and illogical feelings, senseless and blurry affections, obscure self-condescension and trite justifications to appease one’s conscience. Instead theirs is true love, enlightened by Faith, justified by reason, serious, chaste, upright and persevering—in a word, theirs is love of God.

They also offer a prayer. Before all else—because they love it above all else in this world—for Thy holy and immaculate Church: for both the pastors and the flock; foremost, for the pastor of the pastors of the flock, that is for Peter, whom today we call Benedict. May the Church, which now moans as a captive in the dungeons of this anti-Christian “civilization”, finally triumph over this era of sin and implant a new civilization for Thy greater glory. May the saints become ever holier, may the good be sanctified, may sinners become good, and may the impious convert. May the impenitent who have rejected grace and are jeopardizing souls be dispersed, humbled, and their efforts frustrated. May the souls in purgatory rise to heaven straight away.

They also pray for themselves: may their orthodoxy be ever purer, their purity ever more rigorous. May they be more faithful amidst adversity, stand ever taller amidst humiliations, be more energetic in their struggles. May they be more terrible to the impious, yet more compassionate towards those who are ashamed of their sins, seriously strive to overcome them and publicly acclaim virtue.

Finally, they pray for Thy Grace, without which no will can durably persevere in good, and no soul can be saved; may it be more abundant in proportion to the number of their miseries and infidelities.

Heavenly City: The Architectural Tradition of Catholic Chicago

Few Catholics realize just how rich is the history of the Catholic Church in the United States. Nevertheless, great churches still stand in every major city and serve as a testament. Perhaps nowhere in America can one find these stone testimonials more numerous or beautiful than the Windy City. These churches are the subject of a recent picture book titled: Heavenly City: The Architectural Tradition of Catholic Chicago.

This visually striking and carefully researched book presents the rich detail of historic and cultural significance of some of Chicago’s most significant churches. Breath-taking, full-color photographs open the doors to more than 60 magnificent churches, stretching to every corner of the city – from St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette and St. Philip Neri on the South Shore to St. Giles in Oak Park and St. Peter in the Loop.

The inspirational designs are by noted architects such as Burnham, McCarthy, Schlacks and Keely. It is a must for those interested in local history, architectural achievement, theological awareness or those who simply desire to glory in the visual beauty of Chicago’s historic churches.

Author Denis R. McNamara, an architectural historian who specializes in American church architecture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He has written and lectured widely on the history and theology of ecclesiastical architecture, and served on the Art and Architecture Commission of the Archdiocese of Chicago. He is currently assistant director and faculty member at the Liturgical Institute of the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, and serves as a liturgical design consultant.

Photographer James Morris specializes in architectural and cultural subjects from around the world, working with publishers, magazines and architects, including his recent work in the 2000 book Churches of London (Contemporary Books). His work is exhibited in both Europe and the United States and has been awarded prizes by, among others, Chicago’s Graham Foundation for advanced studies in the fine arts, and the United Kingdom’s Design and Art Directors Guild.

The professional quality of the photographs and printing coupled with the awe-inspiring subject matter covered, make Heavenly City irresistible to those who appreciate beauty. However, paging through such a work should be more than a simple diversion. It should instill pride in America’s Catholic heritage, and inspire action to restore the Church to Her former glory…and well beyond.

'Christmas' play insults Our Lady's purity at Columbia University

Send your instant e-protest message against XMAS,
the blasphemous, impure play against Our Lady!

Please read the following with caution since this deeply offends our Catholic sense of propriety:

According to Columbia University's art blog, they are hosting a blasphemous play called XMAS in which the "Virgin Mary" asks for explicit sins of impurity.

This is a most egregious offense against the spotless purity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please:

Send your instant e-protest message

According to one student:

"The show's shock-inducing brand of comedy might be a problem for the deeply religious. But for the rest battling pre-finals depression, this show might actually be the perfect replacement for Prozac."

It is outrageous that unspeakable insult to our Catholic faith is being played at an Ivy League University, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in America.

Take Action
  • Join our Rosary of Reparation on Monday, December 13 at 8PM EST. Our national rosary of reparation is scheduled for exactly the same time as the blasphemous XMAS play at Columbia University.

Thank you for defending Our Lady's spotless purity this Christmas.

And may Her Divine Son reward you with abundant graces and blessings.

America Says No to Ground Zero Mosque

Few Americans are unaware of the controversy over the proposed Ground Zero mosque in New York City. Thanks to the mainstream media, even fewer are aware of the protest against it on this year’s anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack. TFP Student Action volunteers joined the huge rally.

Same-sex "Marriage": Who Sounded the Retreat?

Written by John Horvat

In the history of war, we can observe many cases of battles where someone mistakenly sounds the retreat when victory was in sight.
Traditional_Marriage_Concord_NH.jpg
Traditional marriage has been taken to the polls 31 times and has won each time. So the homosexual movement resorts to judicial activists to impose its agenda.

This seems to be the case against same-sex “marriage.” Traditional marriage has never been defeated. Thirty-one times it has been taken to the polls and thirty-one times it has won. Even in the bluest of blue states—California—it won against all expectations. In Maine, pro-family activists overturned the decision of the legislature. In New York, a same-sex “marriage” measure was defeated despite every effort by the Democratic majority in both houses to force it through.

Homosexual activists in Massachusetts quaked in fear at the prospect that it might be put to the vote. District of Columbia councilmen overturned any possibility that residents might have a say in their government.

Here we have an ideal issue which shows the tyranny of judicial activism at its worst. In the few cases, where same-sex “marriage” has been imposed upon us, most have been through judicial fiat. It is the conservative issue that best shows the brutality of the liberal agenda.

The desperation is capped by a decision of Judge Vaughn Walker which struck down the California Marriage Amendment. Here is a court decision with evidence that is blatantly unscientific and biased. Here we have a single judge nullifying the votes of seven million Californians and redefining marriage in a single stroke.

With thirty-one states banning the practice with constitutional amendments, the other side has no real future—except to sound the retreat.
bugler_silhouette.jpg
With 31 states banning same-sex “marriage,” who is spreading rumors that traditional marriage is a “lost cause?”

To sound the retreat? Yes, to spread the rumors that the traditional marriage cause is lost. With the Judge Walker decision, there are those who are saying there is an air of inevitability to the eventual destruction of marriage in America.

At the moment of our greatest victory, we are told that it is time to give up. Some “lions” of the right are beginning to make statements supporting civil unions or same-sex “marriage”—Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and even Glenn Beck are saying this most important matter is no longer that important and it is time to move on (click here). Practical political “strategists” are saying we need to court the tiny part of that two percent of the American population which is homosexual—even at the risk of losing a much greater percent of their normal political base.

And yet almost nothing has changed. There is still some 80 percent of Republicans that support marriage as a union of one man and one woman and 40 percent of Democrats share in the opposition to same-sex “marriage.”

Thus, we have to ask: Who is sounding the retreat?

Now is the time to sound the charge!

Socialism Divides the Waters: Campaign Report from Austin

By John Ritchie

Last night we enjoyed a delicious meal at the home of a gracious family in Manvel and after a good night's rest, we departed to Austin, the state capitol.

Right after unfurling our banners near the Northcross Mall, the reactions began. "God bless America," one lady said as she drove past, followed by a sinister sort of guttural yell from a different car affirming that "God is dead." These two opposite reactions a few short seconds apart reveal the great division within our nation. There are two distinct Americas: one that is for God and another that is against Him. And it so happens that those who favor socialism often display animosity against God, as we have witnessed.

Texas-Caravan-Day4-02

"This is the answer"

"I've been wondering what I can do for our country and this is the answer," said a Texan man bubbling with enthusiasm for the TFP campaign. Unlike other states where we've campaigned before, a good number of Texans who see the campaign are not just content with honking their horns and waving goodbye. They sometimes pull off the road, get out of their cars, and approach to shake our hands and personally encourage us.

"This is the first time I see someone address the real problem: socialism," remarked a gentleman who had pulled off the road for a copy of our flier 10 Reasons to Reject Socialism. "The Tea Party doesn't address it and I want to help you in any way I possibly can." As he gave us his business card, he added: "I'm even willing to hand over my entire paycheck to stop the advance of socialism."

One more car pulled over. This time an older man with graying hair stepped out of his car and into the blazing sun. By the way, the heat index here is at about 104. "Who are you?" he asked. "Tradition, Family and Property," answered one of our caravan members. He took in the scene of our banners waving in the wind, took a flier, paused for a brief moment and said: "Like the Crusades. Keep it up!"

Texas-Caravan-Day4-03

Double thumbs up

Very few passing vehicles merely honk in response to our signs. Many honk in support, then immediately give us a thumbs up or even two thumbs up. However, I should probably also mention that some people make obscene gestures, but not many. The support is dominant. For example, a man driving a pick up truck slowed down at the intersection and handed us a big package of bottled water. In this heat, water is constantly needed.

At evening Mass we met an energetic Catholic nun who had escaped from Vietnam in the 70s. She kindly gave us a tour of the Church built in honor of the Vietnamese martyrs. At the conclusion of the visit, she inquired where we planned to have dinner and was somewhat surprised with our lack of plans and invited us to a Chinese restaurant, where the younger caravan members tried eating with chopsticks and shied away from tasting squid. But more important than overcoming the fear of squid was the dinner conversation.

The good sister told us how she had escaped from communism on a small boat loaded with 150 people. The infants on board were given sleeping pills and stored in fish crates or compartments beneath the deck. Food was scarce and she went three days without anything to eat. If detected by Communist Vietnamese agents, everyone on board the 25-foot boat would be arrested, sent to forced labor camps, or just killed. During this harrowing experience everyone on the boat was praying the rosary. She reached Malaysia and finally the United States. She also spoke about the persecution of the Catholic Church in Vietnam, which only underscored the need to oppose socialism in America.

On Fatherhood

“Today, fatherhood is an heroic calling. The father of olden times was in many ways an idyllic character, living serenely in the bosom of his family, planning and saving for the future. But today he lives in turmoil and toils in vain. If he is industrious, if he is competent, he does not work for his family and the future but for the lazy and incompetent everywhere. No longer has his home the peace of the old homestead. His children ride in engines of death and destruction, and the jangling of the telephone in the depth of the night may mean tragedy in the air or on the highway. Diseases of the mind, born of the madness and artificiality of the modern environment, derange and sometimes destroy those he loves.

More menacing is the increased threat against faith and morals endlessly made by an increasingly arrogant and unbelieving world. More dangerous by far are the soul’s diseases (with skepticism and apathy predominating), present always like a plague. Life outside of the monastic walls is perilous, fiercely competitive, often brutal. The dedicated father today is a hero, and if you ask why he faces the burdens so bravely, I can answer only because in him is the stuff of saints. Not for him is the consolation of applause. The mother is praised in song and extolled in story. But the father walks the common way without bugles, without drums, with no flags flying. He, truly, has given hostages to fortune.

Those holy men and women who have given up the world are glorious children of God, but if there were no harassed, slaving poor fathers, there would be none of those glorious children, if for no other reason than they would never have been born. Peace of mind and peace of soul are lovely possessions but they are not for the dedicated father. The particular saint in him demands he go out and meet the challenge of the day, that he be concerned not with his own serenity and well-being but with those in his care, that he venture forth into the world and there, thick in the masses of men, seek the opportunity to love his neighbor and to love his enemy, so that, in advance and not in retreat, in battle and not in seclusion, he may prove himself worthy of Him who has shared with him the divine power of creation.

The priest may offer his Mass and the nun her sacrifices, and the contemplatives may send up their unceasing assault of prayer and mortification – all may cry out for succor, may plead to stay the hand of Eternal Justice – but it is the father, that undistinguished, yawning man you see in the early morning leaving home for the shop, the office, the factory, the mine – that tired, troubled person you see returning home at night, often with a smile that is false and a cheerfulness without foundation – it is he who is the first warrior and the first guardian of the Faith. For he is the captain of the home, the citadel on which the Christian civilization is built. There is no order or organization to record his heroism to promote his beatification. He is the common, oftentimes inglorious beast of burden, his greatest distinction being the resemblance he bears to the ass that carried Christ.”

Texans Reject Socialism -- Report From the Front Lines

Written on the road by John Ritchie

I am glad to tell you that the American TFP and TFP-Louisiana kicked off a new caravan in Texas. Our tour is taking us to a number of major cities in the Lone Star State with the clear goal of alerting the public about the growing dangers of socialist ideology in America. As many of our friends and supporters expressed interest in following our travels and campaigns, we will be posting daily updates from the front lines.

10 Reasons to Reject Socialism

Our first campaign today started at a busy intersection in Beaumont. It was in the 90s, and for those of us who are not accustomed to Texas weather, the sizzling hot sun and elevated temperatures posed an added challenge. By the end of the day we all had hats to protect ourselves from the blazing sun. Now I know why cowboys use those characteristic hats.

A lady paused at the intersection, rolled down her car window and said: "I am happy to see you out here dressed like that. You represent me and I am proud of you!" One of our volunteers gave her a copy of the TFP flier, 10 Reasons to Reject Socialism, and she drove away very pleased.

The TFP campaign was very visible. We have a large banner and it reads: "May God protect America from socialism." Smaller posters invite passing vehicles to "Honk for true freedom from socialism." So, as you can imagine, what typically happens is this: as soon as the traffic light turns green a symphonic eruption of honking horns begins. Then there is our bagpiper playing patriotic music which attracts yet further attention. That explains why a news crew with Channel 6 that happened to be driving by pulled over and filmed the campaign. I'm pretty sure they showed a segment of our campaign on the 5 or 6 o'clock news.

"Like Children in an Ice Cream Shop"

"Thank you for doing this," said a passerby. "It's about time someone does something about socialism instead of just talking about it."

Lots of people people driving by honked with broad smiles on their faces. TFP member Charles Sulzen described the support we received today very well. He put it this way: "They see the campaign and smile like children in an ice cream shop."

I should mention that some new volunteers in their teen years have joined us from Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. After hearing about the TFP caravans at one of the Call to Chivalry summer camps, they asked to participate. It is their first caravan and they are doing very well.

Several families here have gone out of their way to assist us during our travels. For example, a delicious lunch and dinner were provided for us at a local Catholic Church hall. During dinner a group of Knights of Columbus gathered to hear more about the TFP campaign.

Tomorrow, we will push on to Houston.

Until then, please continue to pray for us as. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Why We Need An Entirely Christian Civilization

While doing some studies, I came across this interesting passage which explains why society needs to support the family by reinforcing parents and instilling values to children. It explains why we need a truly Christian civilization!

Here is the passage:

"Parents need to hear that their efforts are valued, and they need the concrete support of advice, experience, and time from those around them. Most importantly, parents need others to reinforce the moral values they seek to implant in their children.

"In this regard, the neighborhood serves an almost indispensable function. The idea that families and neighborhoods are mutually supportive, that they are, so to speak, morally on the same page, is fundamental to the public discussion of civil society.

"David Popenoe puts the matter this way: 'For the moral development of children, no aspect of community support is more important than the community’s ability to reinforce the social expectations of parents; that is, to express a consensus of shared values.

'Young people need to hear a consistent message about what is right and wrong from all the important adults in their lives; they need not only a social community but a moral community.'”

Passage found in The Necessity of Politics: Reclaiming American Public Life by Christopher Beem (Chicago: University of Chicago Press), 1999, p.23.
